Opening of new Olympic Venue

Dec 14, 05:02 AM | Athlete: David Florence

The first of the new venues being built for the Olympics was officially opened last week and David was there at the ceremony. The Lee Valley White Water Centre, near Waltham Abbey, will host the canoe slalom events during London 2012.

Opened by HRH Princess Anne and attended by many VIPs including London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe, David was there with other members of Team GB canoe slalom squad at the event on Thursday. Having arrived at the Hertfordshire course on Wednesday, David and fellow team mates had their first opportunity to test the waters on the 300m world class course. Clearly very exhilarated by the experience, David had this to say, “It’s awesome! It’s big and fast with lots of good features. The whole site is very impressive and it was exciting to be there and paddle it for the first time.”

Lee Valley will be the new home for the Team GB canoe slalom squad and David will be re-locating there in the New Year. In the meantime, David is taking a well earned week’s holiday with his family. Tonsillitis and the very cold weather has made the last two weeks very tough for David, so he will be looking forward with renewed vigour to training on the new course on his return.
