Izzy plays catch up

Dec 1, 05:14 AM | Athlete: Izzy Hamilton

With competitions over for Izzy, she is now using the time to build her fitness levels and catch up on college.

Telling Samworth Brothers about how she is spending her time at the moment, Izzy had this to say, “After the World Championships in Limassol I had a week off from training to rest and recover. I also had to catch up on the two weeks Uni work that I missed.”

“I then started fitness training again, getting into the winter programme and concentrating on endurance and strength for the time being! Two weeks ago I went to the November Olympic Development Squad camp in Weymouth. It was my first time windsurfing in the UK since Cyprus and it was a lot colder! We spent some time on the water practicing board handling which is the area of sailing we normally concentrate on over the winter.”

Izzy went on to explain that not all her training at Olympic Development Squad (ODS) level is all physical, “Off the water we did some psychology work to build our mental fitness. In competition racing it’s important to understand all the rules, so this also features as part of the camp training, as well as lots of fitness! I am now back at Uni catching up on the week of Uni I missed for the ODS Camp!”

“For the next few weeks I am going to concentrate on my Uni work and fitness training and then there is another training camp in December.”

Looking forward to the New Year Izzy will wait to hear whether she is up for another award; she has made the final round of voting for the Pantaenius 2010 Young Sailor of the Year, as voted by members of the Yachting Journalists’ Association. This is the second year Izzy has made it to the final, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for her.
