Inspiring the next generation

Nov 9, 12:08 PM | Athlete: Laura Samuel

In between training and college, Laura has been out and about inspiring the next generation of budding athletes as part of the Sports for Schools campaign.

Explaining why it’s important to her, she said, “When I was at primary school we had an athlete come in and teach us sport. He told me I was quite good and that encouraged me to join a club and take up athletics. If I can inspire someone else to do the same, that’s really good. Besides, I love going! The kids get to have a go at triple jump, I show them how to do it, then they get to try lots of other sports. So far I’ve visited primary schools in Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire and I’ll be visiting schools in Leicestershire in the New Year.”

Laura is training on Tuesday and Thursday nights each week with local club Leicester Coritanians, where as one of the older members at 19 she is also inspiring the younger children.

Double training sessions take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These consist of an intensive training session on the track, with her coach, immediately followed by a targeted session in the gym afterwards. These sessions take place using the excellent facilities at Loughborough University. Not content to leave it there, she is also keeping up with her endurance training, through swimming and cross-trainers at her local gym, several nights a week.
