Izzy has won gold again at the RS:X Youth World Championships and named Windsurfer of the Year by the UK Windsurfing Association.
Defending her world title won last year in Turkey, Izzy looked set to re-take the gold medal from day one, after setting up a 17 point lead. Staged in Limassol, Cyprus, the 2010 competition provided a variety of challenging race conditions which marked the top sailors as accomplished all-rounders. Izzy finished the championships with a 16 point lead ahead of the other 38 competitors.
Light winds at the beginning of the competition and particularly on day three of the six day event had Izzy fighting for every point. The return of stronger winds saw Izzy’s racing come into its own, and she built up a huge lead on the last, but one, day ensuring her a silver medal or better on the final day’s double point medal race. However, Saturday’s medal race had to be abandoned when there was still not a breath of wind by mid afternoon. The results were decided on Friday’s results handing Izzy victory and her second consecutive Youth World Title. An elated Izzy said, “I’m really happy, it was a fantastic end to my last year of youth competition before moving into senior level sailing full-time.”
Izzy’s rising star has not gone unnoticed back at home; whilst in Cyprus she was also crowned UK Windsurfing Association Windsurfer of the Year, an award as voted by the UK public.
