Training efforts renewed

Oct 25, 11:36 AM | Athlete: Laura Samuel

Winter training has started in earnest with a tough regime of twice a day, six days a week.

Just as we all found the cold weather last week a bit of a shock to the system, Laura was jolted out of a three week rest with the start of a strenuous period of training. After the disappointment of deciding to stay away from the Commonwealth Games in India, Laura took the opportunity to take a well earned rest from the intense training she had been doing and took time to relax at home. Commenting on her decision she said, “Watching the opening ceremony at home, I wished I was there, but when I saw competitors getting ill and pulling out, I felt it was right not to have gone”. Now the focus is back on improving her ability and staying power.

Laura is training twice a day with one session on the track and one either in the gym or in the pool. Telling us a bit about it she said, “As well as training on the track and improving my technique, it’s also important to build up my strength and endurance. I’m doing this by either doing weights and plyometrics (hopping and skipping to strengthen my legs) or by using a cross trainer or swimming lengths to develop my stamina.”

With no competitions anticipated until early next year, Laura will be able to concentrate fully on her winter training and on completing her studies for a BTEC National Diploma in Sport.
