Following a great summer of results, both on the water and at A-levels, Izzy is embarking on a new adventure at Exeter.
Taking a couple of weeks off from training after her hectic summer schedule, Izzy said, “I am starting Exeter University, studying Geography, which I am really excited about”. Exeter is ideally placed for Izzy, being sandwiched between home in Cornwall and the Olympic venue at Weymouth, where she will be training with the Development Squad.
Weymouth was the venue for her last race, an RYA National Ranker on 18/19th September. Competing in great conditions and sailing on the Olympic race areas, Izzy put in another consistent performance, pushing hard to finish second behind Britain’s number one women’s RS:X windsurfer Bryony Shaw.
On Sunday (3rd October) Izzy competed at UK Windsurfing Association Youth & Masters National Championships at Weymouth. Taking 1st place and the Women’s Youth National title victory, she finished 5th overall in this race where both sexes compete together. Admitting to a bit of a soft spot for the event, Izzy explained, “before I joined the RS:X class I would sail the full series of races that culminates in this event and doing well meant loads. Now my international races over the summer months clash and I can only really fit this race in. For a junior sailor it’s the biggest event of the season, so it was fun to be able to take part again.”
This weekend sees the concluding race of the RYA Olympic Classes National Ranker series for 2010, taking place at the Portland & Weymouth National Sailing Academy (the Olympic venue) on the 9th and 10th of October. These races are vital for Izzy in terms of the funding she receives to support her sailing and her ability to compete internationally. After this event, Izzy’s focus will be once again be turning to the international RS:X race scene, telling us why she said: “At the end of October I am competing in the Youth Worlds in Cyprus where I will be defending my world title!”.
