World Championship bronze

David and team mate Richard Hounslow won a bronze medal in the C2 class at the World Championships on Saturday, but this was tempered by C1 disappointment on Sunday.

The pair had been training in at the formidable course at Tacen in Slovenia in the lead-up to the event and their success followed a ninth place in the semi-final, which only just saw them make the final ten competitors. This meant they were second to go and had to watch a further eight teams tackle the purpose-built course before finding out how their run had faired.

Delighted with the final result their strategy of caution on some of the trickier gates proved them triumphant and resulted in a clear run that didn’t attract any penalties.

The bronze medal at the Worlds follows the bronze the pair won at the earlier Canoe Slalom European championships at Cunovo, Bratislavia. David’s individual canoe slalom saw him make one of the fastest runs, but the addition of penalties saw him drop back to 9th place.

On the final day of the Canoe Slalom World Championships, David’s single canoe event only achieved a 12th place in Sunday’s C1 semi-final; this was a cutting disappointment which left him out of the finals.

The World Championships are the final major event of the season.
