A fantastic final day’s sailing, with a good off-shore breeze in the bay of Marmara, Turkey, saw Izzy speed home to a sliver medal place in the RS:X windsurfing class.
The RYA Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships up until this point provided plenty of sunshine, but not much wind. Izzy had to work hard to better the Turkish sailor, Ofir Halevy, who took the gold medal at the recent Youth European Championships, but both were out-sailed by Kamila Smetkala of Poland in the end. Although toppled from the top spot, Izzy’s had the best result of the GB youth sailing team and has produced consistently good results.
Having returned to the UK she is now back in Weymouth training with the Olympic Development Squad. Her next competition, Skandia Sail for Gold regatta, will be at senior level (rather than youth) and takes place in Weymouth 9th to 14th August. This is the seventh and final event of 2009/10 of the ISAF Sailing World Cup.
