World class silver

Aug 4, 11:32 AM | Athlete: Laura Samuel

A triumphant Laura returns from the IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada with a silver medal and top of the UK senior rankings.

After a shaky start which saw her jump of 12.98m just make the final of 12 competitors, Laura concentrated on getting the run-up right and the jumps started getting longer. She said, “I was so happy, I felt I could get a medal. After my second jump I was placed 3rd, then somebody else jumped really well and I dropped to 4th place, so I gave it my all and landed in 2nd place on my fourth jump. It was amazing!” Her best jump of 13.75m has beaten her own U20 record, placed her top of the Women’s rankings this year and ranks her fifth on the UK Women’s All Time record list.

Laura flew out to Moncton with the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team ten days ahead of the competition to acclimatise and train before the competition started. Now over the jet lag, she’s back to training hard and looking forward to the next two competitions – UKA Jumps & Throws Fest at Hendon, near London on the 7th and 8th of August and BIG Bedford International games on Sunday 15th August.
