David Florence – Slalom Canoeist

Jul 6, 12:55 PM | Athlete: David Florence

Olympiad David won a silver medal at the 2008 games in Beijing and is our most established athlete.

David competes in two canoe classes, C1 which is the men’s single slalom canoe and C2 which is the men’s double slalom canoe. Although originally from Scotland, David is now based in Nottingham and trains at the purpose built slalom course at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont.

Slalom Canoe is fast and furious, each race lasting only 100 seconds and success relies heavily on the competitor’s skill and technique. Slalom canoeists compete separately to finish the course in the fastest time. A good run down the course can easily be dashed when gates are missed and penalty points added.

The summer is David’s busiest time for competitions and he has an intensive programme of training and competitions lined up for the next few months. In fact, he has just returned from three weeks away, competing in the World Cup Series, with races against international canoeists taking place in Czechoslovakia, Spain and Germany.

David’s next race is on Sunday 11th July at the Cardiff International White Water Centre.
