M & S - The Young Ones
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movements such as walking, talking and writing. It occurs due to a loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. A reduction in these cells depletes the ability to send messages to co-ordinate movement. Ten thousand people in the UK are diagnosed each year. One in twenty of these cases are under the age of 40 (most cases are over the age of 50), men more likely to develop the condition than women. The symptoms are individual and can range from, loss of movement, disturbances to speech and swallowing, depression, tremors and rigidity. Relationships between partners, siblings and children can become strained so living with Parkinsons is hard for all involved and will affect 1 in 500 people.
