Brothers Charity Challenge for 2015.  I was providing water activities at the Gloucester Tall Ships Festival in the summer of 2013 when Anil approached me and asked me about the activities I provided and where I worked from.  Anil’s ears pricked up as I told him that my business operated from the smallest town in the UK and that Llanwrtyd Wells was in the Middle of Wales.

Anil was keen to set this year's event in Wales from the outset, but the right location would be needed. With other regions and organisers being considered, Wales had to produce the right environment to meet Anil's requirements.  Options in the Cambrian Mountains, and the Brecon Beacons where put forward and dismissed.  As was the North Wales Mountains and lakes -it wasn't looking good for Wales at this stage! A last selection was put to Anil and one name caught Anil's attention.  Lake Vyrnwy, Anil had remembered it from his past. Finally we had our location.

It’s an amazing outdoor wilderness set in northern Mid Wales Mountains. Never before has an event of this type been held in the region.  The areas surrounding Lake Vyrnwy are of a sensitive nature, designated as National Natural Reserve, it also boosts Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection Area (SPA) , Special Area of Conversation (SAC)  and a RSPB Reserve.  It wasn't going to be an easy task.

The negotiations to gain permissions to access the area would need to start early.  From the outset the local community, landowners, businesses and government have been engaged and empowered  to achieve the unique venue for the this year's Samworth Brother Charity Challenge.

In the weeks leading up to the event, I will be telling you more about myself , the terrain, weather types, kit, clothes, course safety  and associated event issues that you will encounter, more about the local community and history of the region.

Until then, get fund raising and training!
