3rd September 2007

From Jason Beverley, Distant Horizons

Congratulations to everyone who competed on the September 1st event. Whether you won or came last time wise, this is completley irrelevant when the overall focus of the event was about bringing as many people connected with Samworth Brothers together for an amazing and enjoyable experience where money could be raised for charity. Money certainly was raised and to a level that certainly surpassed many people's expectations. The hugely generous donation to the Penrith Mountain Rescue Team now totalling £40,000 is staggering. Not only can the team purchase and specially fit a brand new Land Rover 110 Defender but they can also include a brand new, lightweight defibrillator which is a commonly used and essential piece of life saving equipment. You should all be proud that your involvement with the event will justifiably lead to people in the future being rescued and possibly saved with the new equipment that will soon be purchased and put into active service.

As event organiser it has been fantastic challenge to design an outdoor activity event where the overall journey would be testing and challenge teams to a level where it was tough going for a considerable part of that journey. Let's face it, if it was a breeze then the impact would not have been the same!! I did think that bungee jumping, hang gliding and cave diving may have pushed people right to their limits??

I do hope you have all gone away from the event feeling happy with your efforts and that perhaps now you have a better appreciation of the great outdoors and what you can get out of being amongst it!

Well done and hope to see you all again.

13th August 2007

From the Committee

  • The September event is now closed with a final count of 37 teams.
  • All teams will be competing at the Tough Level and the winners will receive £1000 for their chosen charity.
  • With less than three weeks to go, all teams should be making a final push with their training (more from Jason Beverley, below) and with their efforts to raise as much money as possible for charity.
  • All teams are reminded that they need to bring the kind of raffle prize we’ll all hanker after and one that will encourage brisk ticket sales.
  • Any Personal Information Forms outstanding should be returned to Wendy Levell immediately.

13th August 2007

From Jason Beverley – Event Designer

  • To maximise your ability, push hard now with your training right up until the weekend before the challenge. However, don’t overdo it and become injured – it’s vital that you are injury-free for the event.
  • Concentrate on improving your flexibility and endurance – and don’t forget to keep well hydrated. STRETCH before and after exercising.
  • Eat a good balanced diet, especially the week before the challenge – don’t just fill up on stodgy meals – your body won’t thank you on the day!
  • Bring your training level right down the week before the event and at the same time increase your stretching regime. Keep any training light and regular; swimming, rowing and cycling are ideal – and three sessions of 25mins should be plenty.

A huge congratulations to each and every person who took part in the 1st Samworth Charity Challenge. Given the conditions on the day it was brilliant to see everyone just digging in and getting on with it. It was a massive achievement for every competitor and you should all be extremley proud of your performances irrespective of whether you were first or not - the important thing was that you all did your best and in the process raised gargantuan amounts of money for good causes.

25th June 2007

From Lindsey Pownall - Event Organiser
Just a short note to wish everyone all the very best of luck in their attempt at completing successfully The Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge.
As you all know the real driver for this event as well as having a brilliant time is to raise as much money as possible for charity.
On the night we will total up all the pledges you have made and I will announce the figure we have managed to raise in the June event. Across the 2 events, June and September I really hope we can smash my target of £100,000.
Also on the night we plan to make a cheque presentation to The Penrith Mountain Rescue Team. The raffle of all the wonderful prizes you are bringing up are key to our success in raising as much money as possible for this very important organization. Clearly those of you who need to make use of PMRT on the day will no doubt want to give them even more money!!!!
Please bring your cheque book or loads of cash to buy plenty of raffle tickets.
That just leaves me to say look after yourselves this week in the run up to the event. I promise you, whilst we cannot do anything about the weather, we will move heaven and earth to make sure everything else gives you an experience you will never forget!!!!!

22nd June 2007

From Jason Beverley - Event Designer

It is only a week to go and already i can feel the excitement building! I hope all of you are in the final stages of preparation for your rather 'physical challenge' that you are soon to be undertaking? The week up to the event should be spent as a conditioning phase rather than a final burst of last minute 'quick fix' exercise. It is very easy to over do it and potentially injure yourself so please take it easy. Take light exercise by all means but work considerably more on your stretching - this will massivley assist in injury prevention.. Eat well and drink plenty of water over the next week to flush all of those toxins out!! You have the opportunity to replenish those toxins on the Saturday evening after the event!!

It is essential that the footwear you intend to use for the mountain section is well and truley worn-in, as badly fitting footwear could cause you catastrophic problems - i.e blisters and this could greatly affect you performance - have some 'compeed' or equivalent handy if you start to feel a rub point.

During the event it is my number one priority to ensure your health and safety at all times. I have the services of 22 highly skilled, qualified and very experienced outdoor technicians who will be strategically postioned throughout the course at checkpoints. You will meet all all of these people on your route and they are there to check on your well being and give you assistance where required. Whilst they are not there to show you the way (that's part of your challenge) they will give you all the support and help you require so tap into that resource.

I look forward to meeting you all at the end of the month and i reckon i'll know most of you havng entered all of you details on to this website - please accept my apologies if i get the odd name wrong but there are 120 of you competing. It will be a monumentous event and one that i'm sure you will all thoroughly enjoy.

  • There are now just 2 weeks remaining until the June event.
  • Your training regime should be well established with your fitness and stamina levels building – and maybe a few pounds shed, too.
  • We hope you are being as rigorous with you fundraising efforts and that it is delivering against expectations.
  • A special mention is given to both teams from Marks & Spencer who have pledged to raise £20,000 between them.
  • Team coordinators have now been sent letters confirming accommodation and other important details. Please respond swiftly and return information and Personal Forms to Wendy Levell.

Please look at the training tips page for some updated information on training over the last 2 remaining weeks before your event.

  • September’s event has only six remaining places, please forward your cheques now to Lindsey Pownall if you wish to secure a place on the event.
