Distant Horizons
Health & Safety

Our number one priority during this event is maintaining every individual's health and safety. This website provides a large amount of information about the event and we would strongly recommend that everyone involved takes the time to have an in-depth look through the information we have posted.

Here are some guidelines and safety tips for your team during the event:

  • Stay reasonable close together at all times in case of an emergency
  • Move over terrain in a controlled manner and be fully aware of who or what is immediately around you to avoid collisions (bikes especially)
  • Carry enough water and provisions
  • Slips, trips and falls can happen anywhere so stay focused on all types of terrain.
  • Tiredness and fatigue sometimes results in people 'switching off' which can lead to slips, trips and falls - take on board some energy bars where required.
  • Dehydration is a real danger so stay as hydrated as possible. Take on board liquid even when you don't feel like it! Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee etc a day or two before the event where possible to assist with the hydration building up process.
  • Use footwear that you are comfortable in and have 'broken' in to avoid blisters etc
  • Carry a small first aid kit within your team including Compeed (or similar) to deal with possible blisters.
  • If visibility in the mountains is poor stay very close together and always navigate using attack points (easy identifiable targets to aim to). If in doubt re-trace your steps to the last know point and try again. Getting lost even in the summer is a very strong possibility with poor navigation.

First Aid
At the challenge base there will be a permanent first aid station manned by highly experienced first responders throughout the challenge. You can visit this at any time to have any little niggles looked at from a developing blister to a cut or scrape - you will be dealt with quickly and professionally.

First Aid Stations on the routes

At each activity stage checkpoint every Distant Horizons instructor is first aid qualified and they will be happy to deal with any problems or issues that you have. They will have an extensive first aid kit, spare water, high energy snacks, a radio and a mobile phone. Three members of our staff (Craig Palmer, Dave Atherton and Iain Gallagher) belong to Penrith and Patterdale Mountain Rescue Teams and they will be positioned at strategic locations on the mountain sections and they will be carrying relay radios on the day.

Communications
A mobile phone should be carried by each team - an emergency number at the challenge base will be provided should you need to report an incident. All teams will need to leave a mobile number at the challenge base. Vodafone works particularly well in this area!!
Each team with be issued with a small laminated card which will tell you what to do in an emergency and it will also contain the mobile numbers of all checkpoint control people who can come to your aid should your require assistance.
